“This is a spectacular production which is as striking as it is raw.”

“RUNT benefits from a stellar solo showing by Wilks, a searing soundscape by Kelly Ryall, Jenny Hector’s evocative lighting design and Dee’s astute direction. ”

“The gut-felt anger and complex understanding of Runt is why we go to the theatre.”

Wilks refuses to let you look away from that kind of Hobbesian darkness. She is emphatic in elaborating the resonance between the cruelty her character perpetrates and the treatment she has received.

RUNT is a play about the runts of the world: the lesser, the unwanted, the weak, those without clout, the insignificant. It’s about one small woman’s attempt to take power, to lead the oppressed, to rise up and fight, for equality, for decency and what’s right.

Wilks makes the physical emotional and the emotional physical. With a background in circus, she moves like a hurt animal but is never not human.

Her performance is unforgettable but it’s almost impossible to separate it from the input of the creative team. Every element is integrated, meaningful and so damn smart that every choice feels like there could be no other.

The gut-felt anger and complex understanding of Runt is why we go to the theatre.
